Obituary for Graham Dennis Armitage

Surrounded by the love of his wife of 51 years and best friend Linda, Graham found his peace on Thursday March 9, 2017.
Dear brother to Gordon and his wife Carole in England and special brother-in-law to Anne and David Platt.

He loved unconditionally and was the greatest dad to Craig and Alison, wonderful father-in-law to Jeff and the best grandpa ever to Emma, Mackenna, Jill, Bridgette and Grace.

Loving uncle to Yvonne & Bill, Michelle & James, Debbie & Eric, Darren & Jenny, Jason & Denise, Donna & Pete, Claudette, Joanne & Mike, Lee & Emma.

Graham will be deeply missed by lifelong friends Peter and Danny Kaufman.

A transportation theme dominated his working life as he started with the TTC as a conductor on the St. Clair street car, changing to driving a bus for Gray Coach and then GO Transit where he found his true passion becoming an instructor and then eventually the Head of Safety and Training before his retirement in 2009.

Graham’s retirement years were spent doting on his five granddaughters who stole his heart and became his pride and joy. There were many hours spent on bleachers cheering them on, in school gymnasiums watching them grow, in the car taxiing them to various places and special times spent sharing a Happy Meal or the buffet at the Mandarin. Buster and Buddy also became very special grand-dogs who he loved to tease and who also provided comfort to him during his illness.

When the grandchildren were not keeping him busy, Graham spent his time exploring his love of ships which began in his teenage years when he joined the British Merchant Navy and eventually evolved into his passion for cruise vacations. He loved to be on a deck chair with a drink enjoying the ocean with Linda.

Graham’s great faith helped him to get through the difficult days of his illness knowing that God’s presence was always near. His sense of humour continued until the end and his favourite sayings were “Get a life” and “You only order if it’s free shipping”.

We are comforted to know that cancer could not silence his courage or corrode his faith and that he now has eternal life.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Southlake Regional Health Centre via http://www.southlakefoundation.ca / designating funds to the Margaret Bahen Hospice would be appreciated.

The family would love friends to drop in the Holland Landing Community Centre between 1 and 3pm on Saturday March 18th to see and share memories as we celebrate Graham’s life – be sure to come as you are to this party – as Grandpa would say “No ties, no black and no sad faces!”
