Obituary for Margaret Anne "Peggy" Profit (Davis)

Margaret Anne "Peggy" Profit (Davis)
Margaret (Peggy) Profit passed away peacefully October 14, 2017 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario at the age of 81, after a full and rewarding life.
She was born October 11, 1936 to James and Hazel Davis in Long Branch (now Etobicoke), Ontario, the eldest of three children. She began her teaching career in 1957 in a Grade 1 classroom at Lanor Public School in Alderwood. It was here that she met her husband Keith Profit, a Grade 4 teacher. They were married in 1961. Over the course of a career that spanned four decades, sometimes full-time and sometimes part-time, the bulk of which was spent at Prince Charles Public School in Newmarket, she taught every grade from kindergarten to Grade 8, Special Education, and one summer taught English as a Second Language to refugees and new immigrants. Peggy was a respected and dedicated teacher who gave her all to her students both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities, especially sports. She was fiercely competitive but always upheld the ideals of fair play and fun. She retired in 1998 but continued her role as an educator until June 2017, volunteering at JLR Bell Public School in Newmarket where two of her granddaughters attended school.
If teaching was her vocation, volunteering was an avocation for Peggy. A committed Christian, she believed in demonstrating the love of Christ through helping others. She was very generous with both her time and her money. Peggy was very involved in Christian Baptist Church, Newmarket as a Sunday School teacher, leader of a girls' club, a deacon, Chairman of the Board and a worship leader. She and her husband Keith volunteered together regularly at blood donor clinics, and Peggy also canvassed for the Canadian Cancer Society and the March of Dimes.
In addition to her extensive involvement in the community, Peggy had an active family life. She was a devoted wife to Keith, who survives her, and a loving mother to daughters Beth and her husband Andy Filardo of Basel, Switzerland, Lianne and her husband Danny Brown of Newmarket, Jan and her husband Steve Shaw of Markham, and son Mark of Newmarket. She was the proud grandmother of Heather (Matt Campoli) and Erin Brown, and Nicole, Matthew and Ryan Shaw. Peggy is also survived by her loving sister Marilyn and brother-in-law Alan Ferguson, her sister-in-law Jean Southern (nee Profit), her sister-in-law Michelle Davis and pre-deceased by her brother Ted Davis.
Friends may call at the Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home at 157 Main St. S., Newmarket on Friday, October 20 from 2-4 & 7-9. Additional visitation will be held at Christian Baptist Church (fully accessible - with elevator), 135 Main St. S., Newmarket at 1 p.m. A service will take place at the church at 2 p.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, the Christian Baptist Church Benevolent Fund and the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation online at www.roadhouseandrose.com.
