Obituary for Rudy H. Reiter

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of

Rudy H. Reiter
October 8, 1929 – February 14, 2018.

Loving husband of 45 years to late wife Elizabeth. Children Ralph, Sonya (Michael, Nicole Brown), Susie and Wayne (Alex) Matthews. Life partner Marguerite Sargeant. His late sister Charlotte Garner, her late husband Armin, nephew Harold and Sue (Samantha, Allison). Family in France, his late nephew Georg Garner, Corinne, (Katia and Etienne, Yaëlle). Family in Austria and Buenos Aires.

Born in Vienna, Austria, as a child Rudy was curious and enjoyed walks in the Vienna Woods with his mother and sister. Together, they endured the war after which he was educated as a pharmacist.
Rudy and Elizabeth married in 1953, immigrated to Canada in 1956 and he became a Canadian citizen in 1961. Initially employed at Drug Trading Company to mix pharmaceuticals, he was also talented at Sales and quickly progressed to covering a territory that extended as far East as Newfoundland. Rudy and Elizabeth resided in Toronto where Ralph was born, then moved to Windsor where daughters Sonya and Susie were born. In the early 1960’s he settled the family in Newmarket becoming Manager of British Mortgage & Trust. He subsequently became an independent Mortgage Broker. Always enterprising, thereafter Rudy started a printing company, Prime Press Ltd. The company grew quickly and he relocated it into a new factory built on vacant land in Weston. It was very successful, winning the North America Benjamin Franklin ‘First Award Campaign’ in 1976 and 1979 from the Printing Industries of America. Rudy was actively involved in The Newmarket Lions Club. Rudy and Elizabeth’s commitment to the Lions Music Festival helped to see it grow into a renowned competition with Rudy eventually serving as President of the Newmarket Club. Rudy’s participation in the Lions Club and Elizabeth’s participation with Trinity United Church Women formed the framework of our lives in Newmarket. They built their own home in Mount Albert, Ontario where they hosted many family and friend occasions as well as The Lions Club Pig Roast for several years. In 1972 Rudy and Elizabeth purchased property on what was then considered a remote island in Parry Sound in Georgian Bay. Weekends were spent teaching the value of hard work by re-building the existing cottage surrounded by the pines Rudy loved and the solid granite it rested on. Rudy retired in the 1980’s to travel the world with Elizabeth who had retired years earlier from her work as secretary of Newmarket Recreation Department. Cruising became a passion and the two explored the world until her passing in 1998. In 2003, Marguerite became Rudy’s life partner and addition to our family, and together they continued travelling the world. He took his children on many trips and together too with grandchildren on cruises that will be remembered for a lifetime.

He had cancer for many years, overcoming all odds with fortitude and a positive outlook to enjoy his family and travelling, finally coming to a peaceful sleep on his terms. On Thursday, February 15, 2018, he was cremated, as was his wish, and will be interred at the Newmarket Cemetery next to his wife Elizabeth.
Also near his beloved mother Josefine and sister Charlotte.

A Memorial Service will take place Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 2:30pm at Trinity United Church in Newmarket with Celebration of Life reception at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, Upstairs (elevator access) immediately thereafter.

A man of family, character, resolution and determination, Rudy was a special man of great intelligence, integrity, elegance, warmth, with inspiring insight and perspective which he blessed us with to the end.

No words can express the amazing man we were blessed to have as a Father and the life he forged for us in Canada.

Ralph, Sonya, Susie.
