Joan Eleanor Kinniburgh (nee Archibald)

Joan passed away peacefully on Sunday April 8, 2018 at the age of 76 with her husband and children by her side. Joan was born in Toronto on January 27, 1942 to Eleanor Morgan and Andrew William Archibald. She was raised in Toronto and attended Etobicoke Collegiate Institute and went on to earn an Honours BA in Modern History and Teaching Certificate at the University of Toronto.

Her sense of adventure led her to begin her career teaching history at Lockerby Composite High School in Sudbury in 1966. In Sudbury, she met the love of her life, Murray Thomas Kinniburgh and they were married on November 23, 1968 in Etobicoke. After their daughter, Victoria was born on December 2, 1972 in Sudbury, the family moved to London, Ontario where on November 8, 1974 their son Jeffrey was born, completing their family. In 1979, the Kinniburgh family moved to Newmarket, Ontario where Joan taught history and law at Unionville High School until her retirement in 2000.

Joan and Murray had 18 adventurous years of retirement. They travelled extensively, often in Europe perusing their shared love of family history which included searching Scotland, Wales and England for evidence of where their families had originated. Their love of Canada took them across the country to such places as Dawson City, Churchill Manitoba, and the Magdalen Islands and by ship to Anticosti Island and along the North Shore of the St. Lawrence into Labrador. From May to November of each year, Murray and Joan spent many weeks at their cottage on Lake Nipissing enjoying each other's company, as well visiting family and friends.

Joan enjoyed time with friends, the Church, knitting, reading, genealogy, her cats and most of all her grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her devoted husband, Murray and her beloved children Victoria and Jeffrey as well as her daughter-in-law Kelly McCurrach and son-in-law Darryl Gray who will miss her immensely. Her children enriched her life and she was so very proud of each of them and thankful for the years and experiences she had with them.

Joan was an exceptional grandmother and will be forever cherished by her grandchildren, Toran, Kale and Brezlyn Kinniburgh and Benjamin and Nathan Gray who thank her for all the great moments and memories including trips to Ottawa, rumoli at Christmas, parent free trips to the cottage, baking, sports games and school concerts; a Grandma who always took the time to listen patiently to their points of view, worries and dreams and offer reassurances and boosts of confidence.

Joan is survived by her wonderful sister Carole Aitken (Jim) and brother Bill Archibald (Ann) as well as sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Marc Staff. She is fondly remembered by her niece and nephews, Mike (Michelle), Dan (Allison) and Kevin Archibald as well as Vanessa (Sean) McGuire and Trevor (Jessica) Aitken. She will be warmly remembered by extended family, friends and colleagues.
